Many Pure Comms customers can attest to high quality, reliability and speed of our broadband. This amazing performance looks set to be enhanced if a current experiment in implementing ultra high-tech broadband across the city by the University of Bristol and Japanese technology company, NEC succeeds.

Bristol: future ‘Smart city’?

A recent article by leading technology publishing company, Wired, announced that Bristol is about to begin on a multi-million pound experiment that could see it transformed into the UK’s first ‘Smart city’.

Part of the ‘Bristol is Open’ project, the experiment will be used to kit out the city with the latest sensor technology to gather information on everything from traffic congestion to air pollution using the internet of things: independent machines that are connected by incredibly fast broadband.

Various sensors monitoring a range of data will be connected to a 30 Gigabit per second ultra-fast broadband network, powered by Bristol University’s £12m supercomputer. This data will then be analysed and used to improve the city’s infrastructure and quality of life.

Ultra-fast broadband

The project is being supported with nearly £75m from government and outside funding, as well as an experimental 5G mobile broadband and a mesh Wi-Fi network delivered across a series of lampposts in the ‘Brunel Mile’. If the project is a success, it’s hoped that it could revolutionise the way that businesses work in Bristol.

One of the leaders of the Bristol is Open project, Professor Dimitra said that: “We are going to drive innovation. We’re creating an environment where in a year or two, not five, the whole world will look at Bristol for the future of smart cities”.
