Thanks to our donations, the St. Austell Rugby Club will be looking as fierce as ever as they attempt to dominate this season’s competitions.
St. Austell Rugby Club: a background
Our team have a particular love of sport, in particular rugby, so it was only fitting that we sponsor one of our favourite teams in the region: the Saints.
There’s been rugby in St. Austell for over 70 years, with the first town team, the Hornets, playing from 1933 onwards. When the Hornets moved to Newquay in the late 1950s, this left St. Austell without a rugby team. The efforts of two men in particular, Wilf Vernalls and Des Robbins, helped to form a team to step into the void: the St. Austell RFC, better known as the Saints. The first St. Austell RFC meeting was held on July 31st 1963. Since then they’ve gone on to be one of the best teams in Cornwall.
